If you want to help those you work with or love because they seem stuck and you are aware that they are having difficulty, you can try a few things. Obviously if they need a lot of help, professional referrals are important. But here's what you can look for:
There's a few things you can do... Here's the main thing. Make it their choice. You have to make it about them and their decision! (or you if you want to really do something well) People don't easily take advice so if you can lead a person into a good, solid direction they will be more likely to take their own advice. We're not all stubborn, we just have to be inspired by what we do and make it ours before we actually do a good job implementing anything new. Keep a step small and doable. Consider shaving the step down to make it even smaller if you have to. Help a person choose a good time to implement this small step by asking them, "Exactly when would this thing fit in your schedule?" or simply, "When will you do this?" and "Can I check back in on you on that date?" Of course, sometimes education is important, so giving some facts of best practices is always good. Finally work with the person before you send them off by paining a big picture of what success would look like for them. Paint it with them, letting them lead the way. Walk through how it will look and feel together. If they are really going against their best intentions as they go, paint the picture of success and then choose one little thing they are doing (that isn't good) and ask them if it will help that big picture along. See if adding something in that spot will be helpful rather than asking them to get rid of it. Walk through habit change for yourself and to help others in the Habit Change LAB.
